Biblical ‘Solomon’s mines’ confirmed by dating
Archaeologists have discovered a sprawling, possibly 3,year-old house that suggests a biblical kingdom called the United Monarchy, ruled by King David and later Solomon according to the Hebrew Bible, actually existed. The archaeologists who excavated the house, at a site now called Tel Eton, in Israel, said in an article published online March 13 in the journal Radiocarbon that the date, design and size of the house indicates that a strong organized government existed at Tel Eton around 3, years ago.
They added that this government may be the United Monarchy. The site is located in the central part of Israel in a region called the Shephalah. The Hebrew Bible states that the United Monarchy collapsed after the death of King Solomon an event some historians believe occurred around B. After that collapse, two rival Jewish kingdoms popped into existence — Judah based around Jerusalem , and a kingdom to the north of Jerusalem that retained the name Israel.

By Catherine Brahic. Modern dating methods have determined that huge mines in Jordan are years old, supporting the idea that they were the Biblical mines of Edom ruled by King David and his son Solomon. The age of the Khirbat en-Nahas mines in the Faynan district of southern Jordan has been controversial for decades. The new evidence suggests that the site, one of the oldest, largest and best preserved mines in the world, really is the one mentioned in the Bible.
With Higham and a team of archaeologists, Levy has been excavating the site since In their latest study, they sampled charcoal from successive layers through a 6-metre-deep stack of smelting waste and dated them using carbon isotope ratios. The carbon right at the base of the pit, at the transition point between virgin earth and smelting waste is years old.
He now wants to determine who actually controlled the mines — whether David or Solomon, or regional Edomite leaders who do not figure in Biblical texts. He also intends to study how mining on such a large scale would have affected the local environment. Trending Latest Video Free. Checking the label: a guide to boycotting Israeli dates
Some believe that the fabled mines of King Solomon were located among copper smelting camps in Israel’s Timna Valley. The arid conditions at Timna have seen the astonishing preservation of 3,year-old organic materials, which have provided Tel Aviv University archaeologists with a unique window into the culture and practices of a sophisticated ancient society. An advanced military fortification — a well-defined gatehouse complex — unearthed recently at Timna, including donkey stables, points to the community’s highly-organized defense system and significant dependence on long-distance trade.

In their search for love, men suffer from similar frustrations. The whole process can be deeply confusing. Many fine commentators see Solomon as the hero of the Song of Songs. In my commentary, however, I disagree, seeing Solomon as part of the problem, not the solution. After all, in 1 Kings 11, the Bible does not depict Solomon as the sort of person to advise you on love and marriage. Solomon had deep patterns of sin and failure in his life—perhaps especially in the realm of his sexuality.
Deuteronomy forbade the king from multiplying wives, lest they turn his heart away from the Lord. Yet Solomon acquired no fewer than one thousand wives and concubines 1 Kings In the ancient world, polygamy was a way to flaunt your wealth, ensure many offspring, and cement strategic alliances. On a human level, those reasons seemed wise, designed to give security to the royal house. But acquiring one thousand lovers is a sign of a heart determined to be self-sufficient and independent of God.
Sex is never just about sex. Solomon paid a heavy price for ignoring what God had said in favor of human wisdom. Human wisdom tells us that our sexuality is just another natural appetite to be fulfilled, like eating or drinking.

He is described as king of the United Monarchy, which broke apart into the northern Kingdom of Israel and the southern Kingdom of Judah shortly after his death. Following the split, his patrilineal descendants ruled over Judah alone. According to the Talmud , Solomon is one of the 48 prophets. The Hebrew Bible identifies him as the builder of the First Temple in Jerusalem, beginning in the fourth year of his reign, using the vast wealth he and his father had accumulated.
He dedicated the temple to Yahweh , the God of Israel. His sins included idolatry , marrying foreign women and, ultimately, turning away from Yahweh, and they led to the kingdom’s being torn in two during the reign of his son Rehoboam. Solomon is the subject of many other later references and legends, most notably in the 1st century apocryphal work known as the Testament of Solomon. In the New Testament , he is portrayed as a teacher of wisdom excelled by Jesus , and as arrayed in glory, but excelled by “the lilies of the field”.
His two names mean ” peaceful ” and ” friend of God “, both considered “predictive of the character of his reign”. The conventional dates of Solomon’s reign are derived from biblical chronology and are set from about to BCE. Thiele , the death of Solomon and the division of his kingdom would have occurred in the spring of BCE. Solomon was born in Jerusalem , the second born child of David and his wife Bathsheba , widow of Uriah the Hittite.
The first child unnamed in that account , a son conceived adulterously during Uriah’s lifetime, had died as a punishment on account of the death of Uriah by David’s order.
It took 10 date pits and one olive pit to come to the conclusion that the heyday of the copper mines at Timna, near Eilat, was indeed during the reign of King Solomon, in the 10th century B. The samples, which were dug up by a Tel Aviv University team headed by archaeologist Erez Ben Yosef, were sent to Oxford for a carbon dating test. But King Solomon had in all likelihood no connection to the mines, although they are called after him. The site at Timna, says Ben Yosef, resembles the copper refinery in Faynan, in Jordan, which probably means that the mines were operated by the Edomites, who lived on the eastern bank of the Jordan River, and not the illustrious king of ancient Israel.

I am currently working on a number of book projects. My first book, a commentary on the Psalms of Solomon, is the first major study of this ancient collection of poems documenting the Roman conquest of Jerusalem to appear in over a century. As such, it includes many new manuscript discoveries, including that Dead Sea Scrolls, and archaeological findings that were unavailable to pervious scholars.
My future projects include books on women in the Dead Sea Scrolls and a study of martyrdom in antiquity that will focus on an ancient text known as the Assumption of Moses a. Testament of Moses that was written in the late first century B. This text, I believe, presents a new view of martyrdom, originally intended to resist the Romans, that is also relevant for understanding contemporary events.
